Need to study FOODSAFE in Ottawa
By learning how to handle food safely, you decrease the risk of contaminating food with pathogenic microrganisms and chemicals. Food safety should not only be practiced in food establishments, but in every home. That means food service workers do not have the monopoly on food safety training program, any one who cooks food at home for themselves or other people should know how to prepare food safely.
Food service workers require food safety training
Technically, the bylaw (drafted by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care) governs food facilities not food service workers. It specifically requires the presence of a staff member who has been trained and certified by a provider approved by Ottawa’s health authorities at all times in the food establishment. Depending on how many shifts there are in the establishment, the number of trained and certified staff members may vary. It is the employer/owner/manager who decides which and how many staff members need to sign up for food safety training.
While a food handler does not need a food safety certificate to apply to jobs, an applicant with a training certificate will have an advantage over others who do not.
Programs available at Ottawa First Aid
Basic food safety is an eight-hour program that focuses on basic knowledge and skills associated with food safety at home and in a food facility. The curriculum covers topics such as microbiology, sanitation, and personal health.
Advanced food safety is a 16-hour program that targets students in managerial or supervisory capacities. The curriculum is tailored towards management topics, or things an owner or manager needs to know about running a food business.

Food Handling
Food safety involves the entire process of handling food – from buying produce to cooking and serving it. A food establishment is not just a place that sells food, but any place that handles food such as factories that package food products. It doesn’t matter if the product is sold or given away for free – as long as food is being handled, it needs to abide by all the laws that govern typical food establishments such as restaurants and delis.
